21. Commercials that Make You Curious

I found this commercial on youtube.com after seeing it a few times on TV. Honestly, this commercial make me want to try this berry pomegranate MiO. Even though this commercial is clearly unrealistic, it does encourage the viewers curiosity. The commercial made me want to try the product out of curiosity of what it would taste like or make me feel. I think this kind of advertising may be the most effective kind. Sure, funny commercials are great. I love watching them and I know that most people have an appreciation for an ad that makes them laugh, but how effective is humor in driving customers to go out and buy the product?

20. Dog with a Blog

This is the promo for a new show on the Disney Channel called Dog with a Blog. The show is not great, it seemed childish to me; so I assume it is aimed at a younger audience. However, this show caught my attention because it got me thinking about two different things. First, it got me thinking about the value of a blog. Sometimes, a person needs to express certain things but he/she is not able to, and writing a blog may be that person’s only outlet. This dog has stories to share and feelings to express and the only way he can deliver his message is through a blog, so is that the whole point of people having blogs? To express freely what they cannot express otherwise. The second thing this show made me think of is that the internet is not a safe place. I’m not saying there really is a dog out there writing a blog, that’s unlikely. I’m just saying that we really can’t know who is behind the other screen. Any person on the internet can be pretending to be someone they’re not.

On the Disney channel website they made the blog seem real to the fans of the show by creating a blog for show here: Dog’s blog.

19. Disconnect to Connect

The other day my phone had 2% battery; I was halfway through my first class and I had one more class to go before I could go home and charge my phone. I was stressed about the fact that I would have to be without a phone, as if I depended on it. After my first class was over I walked through campus completely aware of my surroundings, I noticed everyone I passed by, and I noticed the details all around me. I started thinking about something I’ve heard before, it’s an old quote by the golfer Walter Hagen: “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” The first time I heard that quote I thought that it was really deep, smelling flowers might be a simple thing that people take for granted; but it’s little things like this that make us live rather than just walk through life like zombies. The day my phone ran out of battery it hit me, I was living my life without really LIVING it. We are all distracted from our own lives by all this technology and media that we do not cherish our moments, we do not appreciate a beautiful view, we miss out on meeting new people or just having a friendly encounter, we do not enjoy the smell of fresh bread when we pass by a bakery, we curse the inconvenience of rain instead of enjoying its beauty, we don’t even smell the Goddamn flowers! Let’s go against this zombie, technology-based life, let’s socialize less on Facebook and more in real-life, let’s put our phones down and pay attention to the people that are in the same room with us, let’s stop missing moments and start living them. Be real.

18. We are One

On February 1st, 2012 Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie produced “We Are The World 25 for Haiti” a remake of the original “We Are The World, USA for Africa” which was produced in 1985 which was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian. Both the original and new version were recorded in the same studio. A group of artists with great voices gathered to make this song to support people in need. The original version supported the African famine relief and raised $63 million for the cause. In the second version of “We Are The World” over 75 musicians came together to support the victims of the Haiti earthquake in 2010. No matter what their genre, interests, age, or background, these musician all want to help people in need and make a difference, this good will unites them in spite of their difference, and that’s all that matters. If any musician created this on his/her own it would never be as effective and strong as it is when all these voices come together. The union makes all the difference, knowing that this many people came together to help make a difference and do good for others rather than just benefiting themselves and making money. It is inspiring selflessness, generosity, doing good for others, and acting for the common good. This song gets me chills every single time I hear I hear it!

16. Get Out There

When I was driving home today I had the radio on and Phillip Phillips’ song “Home” came on. I didn’t pay much attention to the song, but he said something that immediately stuck to me and got me thinking. “If you get lost, you can always be found.” No matter what you do, nothing is forever. So why not go out there and take risks? The biggest mistake is not doing the wrong thing, it’s not doing what you want to do, and not trying and experiencing new things. Everything we do takes part in creating our future selves. The more we do, the better we become; even if it doesn’t end the way we wanted it to. Everything will be okay in the end, so go out there and DO! Be interesting by being interested, and acting on that.

15. Logo Alterations

Each major company has a basis that they hold on to throughout the passing of time, but major successful companies know that while they hold on to their origin, they must transform with the world. With all the technological advances available today, everything has become fast paced, and companies need to try to keep up and to present their goods or services in the same fast paced manner. I came upon this image on Pinterest.com, I couldn’t figure out who created it but it is absolutely clever, the image views the evolution of major company logos, and in most of the examples the logos become more simplistic as time passes. I think a part of the reasoning behind that, is the effect of the present economy on people. Consumers don’t have time for unnecessary details, and they want to know exactly what they are getting. The newer logos are to the point, telling the customers what the company is, simply and elegantly.

14. A Saudi Woman in America

When the same thing happens to different people it is a unique experience for each person. As a Saudi girl studying Journalism in the United states, I have witnessed this happen first hand. I see international students around campus and I know that they’re having a life-changing experience. however, I also know that their experience is different than mine. Studying journalism in the United States, in a University this strong, is a blessing. There is so much more creativity and passion in my major here, than I would find in Saudi Arabia. I also know that my cultural differences and my background have a hand in making my experience unique, it makes me take away different things than anyone else would, and it makes me stronger knowing everything I have overcome and how far I have came along. I plan to embrace the differences and learn as much as much as I possibly can through this experience. I plan on mixing the best of each culture, creating the best version of myself, and hopefully coming up with original inspired ideas for the future.

12. In with the Good

My friend wrote this status yesterday: “My new motto: Out with the bad and in the good! And no, I don’t mean, “out with the old and in with the new” because new isn’t always good. ;)” I thought it was a clever thought, people are always rushing to get new things and they take all the old things they have for granted. People should start thinking more before rushing into anything; before buying something new and replacing what you already have, pause for a bit, step back, think of WHY you want it and then either go for it or don’t. When the new iPhone came out a lot of people rushed to get it right away and replace the iPhones they own, they paid money and maybe even waited in lines to get it. A few of those people got it because they liked the features it had, but most people only wanted it because it was the next big thing, it was the new toy that wanted to own before everyone else, it was a status thing. New is not always better, more is not always better, BETTER is always better. So don’t do something because everyone else is doing it, do it because you want to. Get rid of all the negativity, only keep what it good.
